Kit Kat – Limited Edition – Fruity Cereal

Posted in Candy, Cereal by

When I was a kid, I BEGGED my parents for a cat. We always had cats, but I wanted my own cat. I wrote a long winded note and taped it to my door, asking my parents to consider my request, that I would feed the cat, clean up after it, etc. but anyone who knows a child, knows that it would be another undertaking of my parents. I don’t think it took much arm twisting, like I said, we always had a handful of cats when I was growing up (and I have 4 of my own now).

I remember my mom and I looked in the newspaper for people advertising that they had kittens, yes I am that old that we used the newspaper! We found ourselves at a lady’s house and she had an adorable litter of kittens. I wanted all of them, but one stuck out to me, probably because she was so small. I left the lady’s house with my runt kitten in tow, a cat that I would have for 20 years. My mom asked me what I wanted to name her, and one name was all I considered, Kit Kat.

I couldn’t tell you if Kit Kats were my favorite at the time, but the two will forever be attached together. Kit Kats are definitely a go to candy for me, especially with the addition of the dark chocolate flavor. Dark chocolate, a candy that I can snap apart and eat methodically? I. Am. In.

When you open the packaging of these cuties, you are immediately met with the smell of berry. Pastel pink with bits of pieces of fruity cereal are really pleasing to the eye. Also I know it is definitely a licensing thing, but I feel like it was a little bit of a missed opportunity by not calling it Frooty Cereal!

The white chocolate is very soft which I remember the Party Ice Cream Kit Kats being the same way. The chocolate is smooth and has a great texture with the wafer part and the cereal bits. The flavor is strong but not overpowering, no distinct fruit flavor that you can pick out, but a nice blend of berry flavoring. Essentially, the overall flavor of these are stronger flavored cereal milk after you’ve eaten all the cereal. I think this is a great white chocolate offering to add to their permanent line up if they decide to keep it around.

Don’t steal my fingerprints to do crimes, it’s hotter than hot in here in California, and everything remotely melty is right on the edge of it’s seat of falling apart in your hands and my Kit Kats are no exception in this heat right now. I would definitely buy these again, and now that I am thinking about it, I should probably put a few in the fridge for a late night snack!

Skittles Dips Creamy Yogurt

The word dip brings about so many different concepts in my head, but for me it’s all about the ’96 bop, “Da Dip” by Freak Nasty. And yeah, my brain definitely went, “when I dip, you dip, we dip.” And then I grabbed these, some other items and dipped out. I’ve gotta say, I love buying candy at Walgreens. The one I usually frequent has a very long candy aisle, a little bit hidden from foot traffic, and they always have deals with a Walgreens card. Like, totally not shilling for the ‘Greens, but hey, trying to find single serving variety candy in my area is hard.

I think it was the creamy white on this package of Skittles that drew my eye first. I’m so used to ignoring the all-red, rainbow emblazoned version that seeing this, with an actual lack of candies in favor of showing off one big dip caught my eye. I wondered how a yogurt dipped Skittle would be, and took it for its word that I would easily be able to tell which color was what under that yogurt coating.

I poured these out onto my desk to find adorable, rounded, yogurt-white colored candy. They have a single silver S printed on each, but staring straight at them, unless you bite through or cut them open, you kinda aren’t really telling what’s what flavor wise. The coating is creamy, delicious, and the flavor is light: more of a sweetened yogurt, the kind meant for adults but if you gave it to your kid in lieu of a mini little bite-sized fruit thing, they wouldn’t notice.

But whoa. The chew is… it’s hard. It’s hard as hell. Ow. Like dude, if you have problems with your teeth? No go. If you like eating and chewing other foods, no go. These— ow. My jaw hurt after about SIX of these, and I had a sharing size pack. Have you ever looked ahead into your immediate future and felt afraid? That’s what I did. I had a That’s So Raven vision of my teeth falling out and I felt SCARED. And to be fair, hours later, my jaw still felt stiff. Wow.

Underneath the coating, they’re Skittles, little fruit flavor bombs of awesomeness, but I’ll be damned if I need to like, suck the yogurt off of a candy shell before I get to crunch in. I suspect that perhaps cooling the yogurt shell to a hardening point probably affected the Skittles underneath, making them at least twice as hard as they should be.

These ended up being an odd pick. Before I scooped them up, I was imagining a sweet, yogurt-covered raisin type exterior, and I got a completed shell version of that. Aesthetically, they’re super pleasing. I love the white shell, I love the little silver S. But golly gee whiz, I’m never attempting to chew one of these ever again.

Yeah no.

I put my hand up on your hip, when I dip, you dip, we dip.

Hershey’s Kisses – Vampire

Posted in Candy by

Happy Halloween 1st everyone! September marks the start of my favorite holiday, HALLOWEEN! Is Halloween even going to happen this year? Can I use a t-shirt cannon and launch candy at unsuspecting trick-or-treaters from a “safe” distance? Is that just a me fantasy? A handful of tasty treats are out this year such as the Witch’s Brew Kit Kats, the Reese’s Franken-cup and these to name a few. (Stay tuned to see reviews of those, because I have totally eaten them!)

Hershey’s Kisses are not my first choice when it comes to filling my candy dish (that I have since given up since working from home for the last year). I typically only ever get them in my Christmas stocking from “Santa” and occasionally in one of those mixed candy bags.

I’ll be honest, upon first glace (and taste) I did not realize that they had strawberry filling. My hand most likely covered the small tucked in graphic on the corner of the bag that said that they were filled with a strawberry creme. Oops!

The outside is your classic Hershey’s milk chocolate. The inside is a super sweet gooey inside similar to a Cadbury egg. Admittedly I ate a couple the other day but didn’t even realize that the creme was flavored because is in my opinion very faint compared to the chocolate. The strawberry was sweet and didn’t taste overly artificial, the creme itself is more sugary sweet than anything. One great thing is that the very red creme doesn’t stain your mouth, though I am sure it would definitely stain your clothes, so these are best enjoyed in one bite.

Overall, these are a nice twist to a classic. If you are looking for something festive, but not overly polarizing for your candy dish, these might be for you. Just don’t put them in your pocket for later or you’ll have a gooey mess!

Milky Way – Salted Caramel

Posted in Candy by

Is it care-ah-mel or car-mell? Either way you say it, this candy bar isn’t new – however it is new to me. Rarely do I fall for impulse buys at the register but something in my brain said “Erin, if you don’t get this candy bar, you will be very mad at yourself later.” At least, that’s how I remember it happening. I don’t frequently buy candy bars, because well, I eat them, and I am trying to cut back on the ole L Bs if you know what I mean.

If I had to choose a favorite candy bar, it would be a toss up between Milky Way and PayDay. Honestly, it would be Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups but are those really a candy bar? And if I really had my choice, I would go with a Milky Way Midnight – the perfect balance of bitter dark chocolate, sweet mallow and caramel. I have always said that I have a sweet tooth, but is it possible to have a salt… tooth too? Sweet and salty is a match made in heaven.

The familiar chocolate exterior of a regular Milky Way greets you when you bite into this bar, in addition to the soft but not messy caramel and nougat. I typically find things like salted caramel usually lacking when it comes to the salt department. The salt flavor is usually so faint that if you hadn’t told me it was there to begin with, I probably would not have noticed. This is not true for this candy bar. You actually get the crunch of the salt, however the bar is not gritty. Its salty, but not too salty.

The only way that I can see an improvement with these would be if they made a Midnight version. Dark chocolate plus a velvety salted caramel and nougat would be a match made in snack food paradise. If you spot these, definitely pick one up if sweet and salty is your jam.

Hershey’s Milk Chocolate with Reese’s Pieces Candy

Sometimes, but not all the time, okay, all the time, yes. I’m always hungry after work. I fast most of my day, and my lunch break is a combo breakfast/lunch thing. I don’t eat very heavily during that time, and most of my beverages are water or on the ten calorie side.

So sometimes, you get off work a little early, you stop somewhere on the way home, and from the brightly lit candy aisle, you make a choice. No, I will put back the Pop Tarts cereal(I should have bought it, but alas, no pantry space). Yes, I will go against my Twix and Snickers habit. Yes, I’ll buy a Hershey’s bar so I can cover it for the blog. Yes.

Yes.

HERSHEY’S Milk Chocolate infused with perfectly placed candy-coated REESE’S PIECES Candy in every bite makes life more delicious!

So I bought the Hershey’s bar. Yes. Okay, but let’s get down to it. It’s Hershey’s, yes, and I would never buy just a Hershey’s bar unless it was that coveted Cookies and Creme, but hello, they put Reese’s Pieces in this bar. I wanted it. I just, I wanted it.

This is one of Hershey’s thinner bars, lovingly laced with mini Reese’s Pieces. At first this troubled me, I wanted big pieces, in a big bar, for big boys. But more often than not, the hungry stomach makes deals our minds would not, and it ends up spoiling our dinner.

Unwrapped from its back seal, this bar shattered into pieces instead of breakable bricks.

But lo, this bar kept trying to disatisfy me. Upon opening it, the bar simply shattered. Morsels of secret-recipe-milk-chocolate crumbled into bits and Reese’s Pieces candy shell shards threatened to spill out onto my desk. It seemed like the thin chocolate bar was simply a means to hide and stuff Reese’s Pieces into it at this point, but everything checked out on the cross-section: the mini Pieces were allowed to sit and set into the chocolate and some of the candy coated shell sticks up under the Hershey’s stamp on the top. The bottoms aren’t uniform unlike a normal Hershey’s mold, the Pieces make cute bumps on the bottom, here and there.

For all of this bar’s splintering and snapping, it tastes like a Hershey bar should. Classically sweet, a little waxy like American chocolate(and admittedly, this very brand) tends to be, but the Reese’s? They elevate. The mini Pieces are the perfect bite-sized golden nugget of peanut buttery, fudge-like delight.

The classic Hershey's stamp is on each bar, with the orange, yellow and brown of Reese's Pieces showing through.

A word to the wise, be cautious of breakage and candy shell shards.

Overall, Hershey’s with Reese’s Pieces turned out to be satisfying team-up twist on two titans. Definitely try it if you haven’t, just maybe uh, don’t drive and snack with this one.

Twix Cookies and Creme

There’s something about a Twix, with its golden wrapper and brilliant red letters that has dazzled me since my youth. Not one, but two cookie and caramel wafers lovingly draped in milk chocolate. The imperfection of their smooth, softly-dried natural ridges and valleys a testament to taste. This is obviously my favorite candy bar, and over the years Twix has come in an assortment of various varieties including peanut butter, dark chocolate and white and even ice cream. Among those variants comes Cookies and Creme, a returning Twix flavor from the 90s.

Twix Cookies and Creme come in a dazzling electric blue wrapper, in regular, sharing size and mini-bar sharing size. They’re unmistakably eye-catching, and upon opening the package, you’ll be pleased to see two Twix essentially the same as usual. But they’re… they’re not. They’re a smidge darker, and one could very well mistake them for dark chocolate. Biting into one feels odd. Twix’s unmistakable snap and CRONCH are gone, with an odd hollowness taking it’s place.

The cookies and creme flavor feels lost, as the creme is light, but lacking in flavor and easily mashed into everything else to be forgotten. The cookie has a slight residual mouthfeel. Most disturbing of all, the outside chocolate, that I described on the original Twix as delightfully draped, drizzled and enrobing two cookie caramel bars? That chocolate is waxy, brittle and flakes off quite easily.

To the tooth, the bars break to the slightest pressure without a true, hard-earned snap. The creme feels like sticky tak and tastes vaguely better. It’s not sweet. They feel stale. They taste stale. And the sweetness that used to come from a mix of chocolate and caramel and smooth, harmless cookie is now carried on the back of the waxy, dollar store level chocolate it’s encased in.

Sadly, Twix Cookies and Creme are dissatisfying in a big way. I’d buy them once(I bought them twice, at two different stores), but wave the purchase off thereafter.

Worth a try, but for the Twix lover, these miss the mark.

Kit Kat – Party Ice Cream – Import Edition

Posted in Candy by

Happy New Year friends! I hope everyone’s 2020 is off to a great start!

I occasionally hit up a local Asian market for yummy snacks. Luckily it’s sort of out of the way, otherwise I would be completely broke from constantly buying snacks from there. Picked up the usual, noodles, some sauces, Lotte Koala cookies, Pejoy, etc. They almost always have sort of import Kit Kat bars but at 7 dollars a bag, I usually go hmm that sounds good/bad/otherwise and put the bag back down. When I saw this colorful bag jump out at me on the shelf, I knew I couldn’t pass them up.

Let’s start with what is Party Ice Cream? I havn’t a clue, but judging by the picture, its soft serve ice cream, cookie straws, and a sprig of mint. Sounds like a pretty tame party if you ask me. For some reason, my brain interpreted the speckles on the Kit Kat pictured on the package as sprinkles but alas, it is just what appears to be microscopic cookie pieces/crumbs.

I was concerned that these were going to be flavored white chocolate which I a not a fan of. To me, white chocolate is overly sweet and not the best flavor. When I opened the bag, I won’t lie, it smelled a bit like sour milk. I was afraid I was in for a real doozy of a treat but I pressed on. The Kit Kat coating is very soft, not a white chocolate at all. It has a very distinct dairy/vanilla ice cream flavor. It is sweet but not overly sweet or artificial tasting, the wafer inside mixed with the outside coating makes it taste like a perfect vanilla soft serve cone in one of those thin wafery ice cream cones. I immediately hid these in my desk drawer because them being in any easily accessible space means that they would be instantly devoured.

I am going to pop a few in the freezer because I imagine that they would be absolutely delightful frozen. If you are feeling adventurous, I would suggest you pick up a bag if you find them at your local import market or Amazon/Ebay.

M&M’s – Snack Mix – Sweet And Salty – Milk Chocolate

Posted in Candy, Snack Mix by

Good Morning Friends! I hope everyone’s week is off to a great start.

I have been on a mini quest to try and find the two new M&M snack mixes and was just starting to give up when I spotted these while getting gas at a Shell station the other day. Normally I don’t go in to the store but something told me that I should and I am so glad I did. These were tucked up by the register and I only spotted them at the last second before paying for my coconut water and ranch Bugles. Wow what a mix – I bet my breath smelled great during the fitting that I was doing that evening. Sorry guys.

I wandered back into my office – wanting something chocolaty and remembered that I had these in my purse. YES. PURSE SNACKS. (there are also some other snacks in there that I intend on reviewing – what else do you use purses for?) I didn’t want to dump the snack mix on my desk like some sort of caveman so I cleared off my little cactus dish that I use to put miscellaneous items in like push pins, nails, razor blades, etc. and poured it in there – how fancy!

Fanciness aside I convinced myself that instead of acting like Cookie Monster from the Muppets and just dumping this handfuls at a time into my mouth that I would eat this mix one piece at a time. There is a mixture of crispy M&M’s and regular milk chocolate M&M’s which are both tasty. The little pretzel balls are really salty which is totally my jam. The almonds are lightly salty and make for a good addition to this mixture. Overall I would consider this the best part of trail mix. Take out the dumb raisins, take out the dumb peanuts and ding ding ding, you have the perfect mix. I am glad that I snagged a smaller trial size bag of this snack mix vs the larger feed bag size because I know I probably wouldn’t be able to stop myself from pouring a few more dishes.

I really liked this mix and I would totally buy it again. If I am able to find it in the larger sized bags, I will definitely have to portion it out into small containers to keep myself from demolishing the whole bag.

Haribo – Starmix

Posted in Candy by

Good Morning Friends – Things are in full swing at work, so today is just a quicky little post. Haribo make some of if not the best gummy items in the entire universe in my opinion. I prefer my gummies to be on the chewier side vs the soft squishy side and Haribo always delivers. Somewhat recently they came out with the Starmix… mix. and I am all over it. And every time I think the word Starmix, I think of The Weeknd – Motherflippin Starmix.

A brief search shows that you can indeed get pretty much anything gummy in this mix. A lot of images show getting their egg gummies but mine contained no such sort.

My mix contained Twin Snakes, Friendship Rings, Cola Bottles, Happy Cherries, and their signature bears. I personally am not a fan of cola flavored things, so that works well for my coworker that enjoys them and often raids my desk drawers for food after hours – more for him. I honestly have never had the friendship rings (or really even knew they were a thing) but Twin Snakes and Happy Cherries? YES PLEASE. Also the idea of wearing a food kind of grosses me out. I know that its more of a kid thing ala candy necklaces, etc, but I am not into the idea of nomming a ring off my germy hands.

Overall this mix is delicious. I like that you get a little bit of everything because bags of gummy things never tend to last long and its nice to mix it up the flavors and offerings. Overall I really enjoy this mix (minus the cola bottles) and would buy it again. Hopefully next time I will get some of those eggs!

S’mores Crunchers

Posted in Candy, Confectionaries by

Good Morning Friends! If there is one thing that I am familiar with, it is impulsive buys at the check lanes of various stores. We will come back to this.

I try to mix up where I write so that it doesn’t become stale (heh food reference) and today I am tapping away at a Starbucks near my apartment. I just watched a woman meet another woman, and she brought the other woman a large Ziplock bag of what I believe to be fresh parsley or clovers from her front yard – I can’t tell but it seems like a weird gift offering for a breakfast date at Starbucks. Strange.

Back to the check lanes, I did a stint as a cashier at Target before getting promoted to the Grocery Manager there and one thing I would often do when I didn’t have any customers was organize all the check lane candy. I still do this when I stand in line at other stores, it’s just a habit I have. I also used to organize all the register impulse items when I worked for Hot Topic, so I am familiar with what scheming is going on here. Get that one last dollar before you leave, and I fall for it every time if they post up something new there. Gum? Yes please. Mints? Put it on my bill! Candy? SOLD.

When I was checking out at Walmart recently (probably buying all the mug cakes mentioned in the previous post – I have no shame) I found these tucked away at the bottom of the check lane. From the picture they reminded me somewhat of Bunch-a-Crunch. Do they even still make that? Quick Google search – yes, yes they do.

These are packaged in the same way that they Reese’s Crunchers, Hershey’s Crunchers, Cookies n’ Cream, etc. are packaged – small bag, similar to a bag of peanuts that you would find at a gas station, that you tear open and dump the entire contents in your mouth at one time.

Let’s just come out and say it. This looks like dry food you would feed to an animal. Visually its not great. For some reason the chocolate looks like at some point it was melted and then came back to solid giving it that ghosty light color. I thought maybe I inflicted this from a tight grip on the package for too long, but after looking at a few other reviews it appears that I am not alone based on their pictures. Upon first bite I had two simultaneous reactions – WOW this is sweet, and WOW I think I might have just cracked a tooth.

Between having two different graham offerings (why?) and the hard “marshmallow” pieces, this snack is next level “cruncher”. With the abundance of graham pieces you can definitely taste that, but to me it does not taste like a true S’more. The chocolate encapsulates EVERYTHING, which in turn overpowers everything. I think I would have liked this better had they broken the components up ala Goldfish cracker S’mores. I would have also liked to have seen something more similar to a Lucky Charms mallow used instead of the mallow pebbles used.

To me, this would best be served on vanilla ice cream or something of that nature, but other than that, not something I would buy again. I am glad I opted for the smaller bag that way I don’t feel the need to pawn it off on my poor coworkers.
